Meaning of Brisset

The Meaning of the Brisset Surname

The Brisset surname, found in various spellings such as Bresson, Bris, Brise, Brisard, Brissard, Brisse, Brisseau, Brisson, and others, is a renowned French medieval nickname. It is believed to derive from the Old French word "bris," which means "break" and describes an awkward or clumsy person. While this may be the case, it would seem that there were many clumsy individuals breaking things – and many of them seem to have reached high ranks. A more plausible assumption is that "bris or briser" originally described a warrior who earned the name through the use of force.

However, like most observations regarding nicknames, this is mere speculation. True accuracy is quite impossible unless one was actually present when the name was "given" to the recipient perhaps seven hundred years ago. Less speculative is the possibility that the true origin is Gaelic, a language also known as Celtic, which traveled along the west coasts of France, England, Ireland, and Scotland for many centuries. In Gaelic, "bris" means break, and as it is likely a thousand years older than French, this seems to prove the true origin, although it still does not explain fully why the surname is entirely associated with France.

According to our research, all variations of the surname and all granted coats of arms are French, and many played significant roles in French history. There are too many coats of arms to be covered by this limited research, but as an example, Bris of Bretagne bears a red field occupied by a golden fleur-de-lis between three fishes. The fleur-de-lis was the personal symbol of the King of France, suggesting that the bearer was close to the court. Another example is Brisson of Poitou, which also features a red field signifying battle and is charged with three silver lances in pale.

Unfortunately, the early French birth, death, and marriage records were almost all destroyed by the Revolutionaries of 1792, considered "silent" agents of the king's secret police. Among the relatively few that survived were those of Nicclas Bresson as a spelt grower on February 16, 1678, in Cerbeville, Meurthe-et-Moselle, and Dominique Brisson in St. Germain, also in Meurthe-et-Moselle, on August 10, 1705.
