Meaning of Burlay

The Meaning of the Surname Burlay

The surname Burlay is of Anglo-Saxon origin and is a locational surname derived from one of the various places throughout England named before the 7th century with the Old English "burg, burh", meaning fortified place, fortress, combined with "leah", meaning wood, clearing. Some of these places include Burleigh in the rural district of Easthampton in Berkshire; Burleigh near South Stroud in Gloucestershire; and also Burley in Hampshire, Shropshire, Yorkshire, and Derbyshire. The latter four were recorded respectively as "Burgelea" in 1178, as "Burlegh" in 1233, as "Burhleg" around 972, and as "Burleye" in 1251.

The initial element "burg, burh" is prevalent in place names. Often, the reference is to a Roman or other pre-English fortress, although in many cases, "Burg" likely referred to a fortified mansion: examples include Simon de Burley (Shropshire, 1273) and Hugh de Burlay (Berkshire, 1273). An Edward Burleigh from Wiltshire was registered at the University of Oxford in 1577, and Robert Balfour, the second Baron Balfour of Burleigh (died 1663), married the title's heiress and acquired it through a royal patent.

A coat of arms granted to the Burleigh family consists of six silver and red escallops, on a chief also six crescents, all counterchanged, the crest being the head of a red stag erased. The first recorded spelling of the surname is that of John de Borleg in 1272 in the "Hundred Rolls of Shropshire" during the reign of Edward 1, known as "The Hammer of the Scots", 1272 - 1307. Surnames became necessary as governments introduced personal taxation. In England, this was known as the Poll Tax. Over the centuries, surnames have continued to "evolve" in all countries, often resulting in surprising variations from the original spelling.
