Meaning of Cheramie

Cheramie: A Name of Breton Origin

Today, nearly two-thirds of Louisiana's Cheramie families can be found along lower Bayou Lafourche in towns like Larose, Cut Off, Galliano, Golden Meadow, and Leeville. The roots of these families can be traced back to a single progenitor - Joseph Cheramy, a native of Mauron in Brittany.

Contrary to popular belief, the surname Cheramy, or Cheramie, is not of Acadian origin, as many might think. Instead, it has its roots in Brittany and dates back to the late seventeenth century. Joseph Cheramy left his hometown around 1783 to settle in Nantes, where he married Anne Aucoin, an Acadian refugee.

Although their names do not appear on any official passenger lists in 1785, it is believed that Joseph and Anne arrived in Louisiana on one of the seven refugee ships that made their way to New Orleans that year. By 1786, their presence was recorded with the birth of their son, Joseph Jr., in the Ascension Church in Chetimaches (Donaldsonville).

Tragically, Anne Aucoin may have passed away during childbirth, leading Joseph to marry Gertrude Michel the same year. This union resulted in several children, including three sons - Joseph-Baptiste, Jean-Baptiste, and Zénon.

Establishment in Louisiana

By 1788, Joseph Cheramie and his family settled along Bayou Lafourche like many other settlers of French and Spanish descent. In 1796, Joseph acquired a large land grant of 4,800 acres along lower Lafourche, where they made a home in the wilderness.

Through the years, the Cheramie name became firmly established in the area, mainly through Zénon Cheramie and his descendants. The family's presence was marked by marriages, births, and a strong legacy along lower Lafourche.

Expansion and Legacy

Throughout the 1800s, the Cheramie name continued to flourish along the lower Lafourche, with many family members residing between Raceland and Larose. Some members sustained themselves through hunting and fishing in the marshes and barrier beaches.

It wasn't until the late 19th and early 20th centuries that Cheramie families began to concentrate in Golden Meadow and surrounding towns, driven by natural disasters and the rise of commercial shrimping in the region. Many Cheramies became shrimpers, working out of Cut-Off, Galliano, and Golden Meadow.

Post-World War II, some members of the Cheramie clan migrated to the New Orleans area in search of job opportunities in industry and services, marking a new chapter in their family's history.

In conclusion, the Cheramie surname, with its roots in Brittany, has a rich history in Louisiana, with a legacy of strength, resilience, and adaptability that continues to thrive to this day.
