Meaning of Docker

Docker Meaning: A Surname Perspective

The surname Docker, made famous in the 1950s by Sir Bernard and Lady Docker, is English and surprisingly not occupational but rather location-based. It originates from one of the two small hamlets named "Docker" in Westmoreland and Lancashire, meaning "the pasture land in the valley" from the Old Norse-Viking "dokr" before the 7th century. The village in Westmoreland appears in county records for the year 1155 as "Docherga." The family name is recorded much later, not before the 16th century.

This suggests that the village may have been "cleared" during the time of the Enclosure Acts, which took over three hundred years of parliamentary time between 1450 and 1750. These laws gradually deprived the village tenants of their common pasture and then forced them off the land to seek homes and jobs elsewhere. When this happened, the unfortunate ones either received or took as surnames the name of their former village. Early examples of the surname records are Elizabeth Docker, listed in the Wills of Lancashire County in 1579 in Richmond, Yorkshire, and William Docker, in the same lists, but in 1587. The very first of all known records was not in the north at all, but in London. In 1564, Robert, son of Thomas Docker, was baptized at St. James Church in Clerkenwell, but sadly Thomas died in 1565, just a year later, and was buried in the same church. This was during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, 1558-1603.
