The place name is first mentioned in 996 AD in Staffordshire as "Fetherestanhalg" and as "Fetherstane" in the Domesday Book for Yorkshire in 1086, but perhaps surprisingly not until 1204 in Northumberland, when it is recorded as "Fethererestanhalg." It is believed that the earliest surname records come from Yorkshire and include Simon de Fetherstone and Petrus de Fetherstan (so much for medieval spelling), both of whom appeared in the Poll Tax Rolls for the county in 1379.
Among the famous or interesting bearers of the name are Richard Fetherston, who was the chaplain of Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of King Henry VIII of England. Fetherston vehemently protested against the King's divorce from Catherine. In 1535, he was beheaded for his courage and is now regarded as a Catholic martyr. Another who paid with his life was Sir Timothy Fetherstonehaugh, a prominent Royalist. He played a significant role in the English Civil War (1642 - 1652) and was eventually captured in the Battle of Wigan in 1651. He was then beheaded on the orders of Oliver Cromwell for high treason.
