Meaning of Fiddiman

The Meaning of Fiddiman: Exploring the Surname’s Etymology and Origins

The famous Victorian etymologist Canon Charles Bardsey was adamant about the origin of this unusual surname. He described it as "the son of Frethmund," but since it was first recorded in Kent, this does not seem to be correct. The surname Fiddy, along with its variants Fido and Fidoe, is also referred to by Bardsey as derived from the Old English "Friswid," but the late Professor Reaney argues that it is French and a dialectal derivation of "fitz deu," a loose phrase translated as 'Son of God'!

Reaney does not attempt to explain "Fiddyment" (in its various spellings) at all, which is surprising, as Fiddyment, Fiddymont, Fiddament, and the more common Fiddeman or Fiddiman are quite popular in Norfolk, appearing to be only in that area.

Based on access to records that were not available to other researchers, we believe that the name (however spelled) could have a French origin from "fitz deu," but if so, we are inclined to view it as a theatrical name for someone who either played the role of 'Son of God' or perhaps was the friend (-mann) of 'Fitz deu' and possibly a pilgrim. Early records are confused in their spelling, which in itself complicates an objective assessment. These records include Margaret Fidiman, baptized on September 19, 1542, in St. George's Church, Colegate, Norwich, Robert Fiddymont, a witness in St. Peter's Southgate, Norwich, on December 1, 1576, and Robert Fiddiman, on April 13th, 1606, in St. Benedict's, Norwich. The first recorded spelling of the surname is that of Thomas Fydymont, dated 1470, the rector of Shelton parish, Norfolk, during the reign of King Edward IV of England, who ruled from 1461-1483.

Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England, this was known as the Poll Tax. Over the centuries, surnames have continued to "evolve" in all countries, often leading to astounding variations of the original spelling.
