An indigenous line of the Council of Cangas with a house in Navia and Luarca in the Principality of Asturias.

It is an absolutely confirmed fact that the primitive Solar of this line resided in Asturias. It is very old, and its origin dates back to the time of King Alfonso, "el Casto," as this monarch ordered the construction of a castle or a fortified house in the Council of Cangas in 798 when the Christian armies triumphed. In the battle of Lutos, he wanted to protect the reconquered territory from possible Muslim attacks, who were eager to regain what was lost.

This king, whose reputation as cautious has survived until today, was aware that the position of the border towns was very important and that it was convenient to appoint men who not only corresponded to his full trust but were also experienced warriors. He did so and, in return, granted them the privilege that the fortresses he left in their care would be converted into land for their descendants.

One of the families chosen by the monarch was the one that adopted the surname Fuertes, taking it from the nickname under which their knights were known, who always proved their strength in all battles they participated in, known as "the Strong."

One branch of this line settled in Cisneros at the end of the 16th century and was no less fruitful than the original stem in terms of enlightened men.

Don Pedro de Fuertes was the secretary of the Chamber of the Hon. Archbishop of Valencia and received a canonry in Jaén in 1777. Don Julián, a brother of his, was the official royal treasurer of the Timapán Mines in Mexico for many years. His services, which must have been very valuable, were rewarded with the title of a knight of the very royal and prestigious Order of Carlos III, granted on June 17, 1792. There was a third brother, Don Francisco, who was secretary to the Viceroy of Mexico and died as administrator and general treasurer of all the revenues of S.M. in the kingdom of Valencia.

Other members of this surname were involved very early on in the conquest of the American continent, which we will discuss later. Don José de Fuertes Michel chose a diplomatic career, participated in several embassies, and was finally appointed secretary of the Spanish embassy in London. He later went to America and became the General Post Office Administrator of the islands of Cuba and Santo Domingo. In 1792, the king wanted to reward his merits by granting him the title of a knight of the royal and prestigious Order of Carlos III.

Another Fuertes, Don Pedro de Fuertes y Catalán, chose a career in the military and studied at the Artillery Academy of Segovia. During his military career, he distinguished himself in the war against the French Republic, to the point that Don Manuel Godoy, the Prince of Peace, honored him with his friendship and described him as one of the most outstanding officers of the time. Due to his very poor health, he was forced to retire from the army and take over the administration and management of the nitrate and gunpowder factories in Seville. In 1826, he was appointed administrator of all revenues on the island of Mallorca but died before he could take up his new post.

Regarding the members of the surname who reached America, Pedro de Fuertes must be mentioned as one of those who accompanied Hernán Cortes in the conquest of Mexico. He was one of the captains who disagreed with the somewhat brutal actions of Alvarado in dealing with the indigenous Aztecs, leading to a very tense situation with the conqueror. Deposed by Alvarado from his rank and command, he was reinstated thanks to Cortés, who restored all his dignity upon learning about it.

During the day known as the "Sad Night," Pedro de Fuertes was one of the last to leave the Aztec capital, taking up the rear guard of the Spanish soldiers, resulting in him being seriously wounded. However, he wanted to participate in the memorable battle of Otumba, which exacerbated his injuries leading to his death gloriously on the battlefield.

Another Fuertes, Diego de Fuertes y Vázquez de Prada, was present in the conquest of Chile under the command of Adelantado Don Pedro de Valdivia and made a name for himself not only for his courage but also for his prudence and diplomacy in dealing with the Araucanians. After the country was pacified, Fuertes married a native woman, leading to a Spanish-Araucanian line established in the city of Santiago. Many of the Fuertes surnames in this Andean republic are descended from him.

Finally, Gonzalo Fuertes de la Quintana is remembered, a brave captain who fought in Italy under Emperor Carlos V and later, during the reign of Don Felipe II, did the same in the memorable battle of San Quintín, where he fought known for his courage and bravery in combat. Back in Spain, he married Doña Ana de Varcárcel Saavedra and settled in the city of Valladolid, where he left descendants.
