Meaning of Imlaw

The Meaning of the Surname Imlaw

The very unusual surname Imlaw is of Scottish origin and is derived from the Old Gaelic "imeallach" or "imleach", which can be translated as "border land" or "marshy coastal land" and was originally given as a topographic name to someone whose dwelling was on the edge or coast. Topographic surnames like this were among the earliest, as both natural and man-made features in the landscape provided easily recognizable distinguishing names in the small communities of the Middle Ages.

The surname was first recorded in Scotland at the beginning of the 15th century (see below). A John Imlach was admitted a burgess of the Burgh of Aberdeen in 1440, and in 1479 the variant spelling Imlaw was recorded in the aforementioned Burgh. Other variations, Imloch, Emlach, and Imlacke, appear in records from the 17th century. A Thomas Imloch was entered into the Register of the Privy Council, Nigg, Ross-shire, in 1607, and Robert Emlach was a schoolmaster in Abercherdour in 1636 (The Presbytery Book of Strathbogie). John Imlacke, a tenant of Gordon of Gight, was charged with riot in 1678. Records from Scottish church books include the baptism of Anna, daughter of William Imlach, on August 22, 1725, in Rayne, Aberdeen. The first recorded spelling of the surname is that of Thomas Imlach, who was charged as a forester and is dated in the "Council Register of the Burgh of Aberdeen", Scotland, during the reign of King Robert III of Scotland, 1390 - 1406.

Surnames became necessary as governments introduced personal taxation. In England, this was known as the Poll Tax. Over the centuries, surnames have continued to "evolve" in all countries, often leading to remarkable variations of the original spelling.
