Meaning of Juster

Juster Surname Meaning and Etymology

Throughout the various spellings of Just, Juste, Gaster, Gister, Goster, Jewster, Juster, and possibly others recorded, this is a surname likely of pre-medieval French origin. It appears to descend from the Latin word "justus" and was likely introduced to England by the Norman-French invaders after the famous conquest of 1066, although it may have existed earlier. It is believed to have originally been a metonymic or nickname for a person considered "just" or who administered justice, although this person may not have been a judge or similar official.

In fact, some of the early recordings suggest that it may have been satirical for a person considered the opposite of just! An early record is that of Gilbertus Juste in the Pipe Rolls of Lincolnshire in the year 1203. The given name is said to have gained prominence in the 4th century AD, when a certain "Justus" was appointed as the Bishop of Lyon in France. As far as it gained popularity in England, the surname seems most closely associated with the county of Suffolk in East Anglia. There, the two brothers Martin and Roger Just are recorded in the Pipe Rolls of the county for the year 1292, with these individuals being particularly associated with the village of Thurlestone, while Thomas le Guste appears in the Subsidy Rolls of Somerset county in the year 1327. These records suggest that Thomas may not have been as "just." Jonathan Juster is also recorded as Jonathon Jewster in the registers of St. Ann Blackfriars in the City of London between November 16, 1651, and November 4, 1653.
