The surname was found in Scotland in Skye and Mull and in Ireland in the border county of Leitrim and in the southern counties of Cork and Killarney. In its various forms, the surname, with about ten thousand bearers, is considered the sixtieth most popular in Ireland, but is very rare in Scotland today. The earliest record seems to be the example shown below, while other records include Archibald McShirrie from Leattir, Scotland, who was accused of "illegal defense" in 1635, and John MacScherie from Dowart who was declared a rebel in 1675, his fate is unknown! In Ireland, Elizabeth M'Chirrie married James Morrison on December 12, 1754 in Carmoney, County Antrim.
An unusual record is that of John Mcsarry (as spelled), a passenger on the ship "Messenger" from Liverpool bound for New York on June 5, 1846. He was 18 years old, listed as a farmer on the passenger list, and one of the first emigrants fleeing before the "Great Famine." The first recorded spelling of the family name is that of Duncan Glas VcShirie, dated 1629, executed for piracy in Oskamull during the reign of King Charles I, known as "The Martyr," 1625–1649. Surnames became necessary as governments introduced personal taxation. In England, this was known as the Poll Tax. Over the centuries, surnames have continued to "evolve" in all countries, often leading to amazing variations of the original spelling.
