Meaning of Maidlow

Maidlow Meaning: Unraveling the Mystery Behind the Surname

Delving into the origins of the surname Maidlow has proven to be quite a challenging task. The implication is that it comes from an ancient location, possibly of Old English origin before the 10th century, deriving from a place known as "Hill of the Maidens." In fact, there are many such locations with the prefix "Maid(en)" including Maidstone, Maidwell, and Maidenhead, all translating to the same meaning, although the exact significance may vary. However, there is no known place like "Maidlow", with its suffix being a contracted form of the Old English word "Hlow" which means hill.

This in itself is not uncommon, as there are known to be at least five thousand "lost" villages that have given rise to existing surnames. The mystery lies in the fact that the earliest record we could find dates back to the 17th century, only in the English Home Counties, with no trace found in any other region. Despite examining the Huguenot registers, we were unsuccessful in tracing its origins, and it is much too late for the Flemish weavers. We believe Maidlow may be a later variant of Medlow, but Medlow itself is likely just a misinterpretation of Maidlow.

Examples of recorded instances include William Earl Maidlow, a witness at St. Mary Le Bone Church on November 21, 1756, and Jane Harriet Maidlow, baptized at the Mansion House Independent Church in Camberwell on September 15, 1822. The earliest recorded spelling of the surname is that of Samuel Medlow, dated January 13, 1685, as a witness at St. Giles Cripplegate in London during the reign of King Charles II, also known as "The Merry Monarch", from 1660 to 1685.

Surnames became necessary as governments introduced poll taxes to levy individuals. Over the centuries, surnames have continued to "evolve" in all countries, often leading to remarkable variations of the original spelling.
