Meaning of Massard

The Meaning of the Surname Massard

The surname Massard, recorded in various forms including Masse, Massart, Masselin, Massel, Masserel, Masserelle, and the anglicized Masurel, has its origins in medieval France. The "Dictionnaire etymologyque de France" describes it as occupational, a shortened form of "masse d'armes," meaning a mace-bearer. The alternative spellings, including the suffixes el or in, are diminutives or double diminutives, meaning "the son of the mace-bearer" or "the son of the son of the mace-bearer." An estimated quarter of all surnames were originally occupational names, although many did not become hereditary unless, as with this surname, the son or grandson followed in the father's footsteps.

As a result, the diminutive and double diminutive spellings are often more popular than the base name. French church records are irregular at best and often non-existent. Many, indeed most, were destroyed during the infamous Revolution of 1792 - 1796, when the Catholic Church, the only legal form of worship under the various monarchs, was completely banned for several years. When the church records were found, they were burned by the revolutionaries who claimed they were tools of the hated secret police. However, we were fortunate to find a number of early records associated with this name that have survived. These include Paul Massaret, whose son also named Paul was baptized on October 17, 1593, in Sedan, Ardenne, Caterine Marie Masserel, daughter of Joseph Masserel, baptized on January 6, 1765, in Xarmes, Meurthe-et-Moselle, and Rene Masse, who married Felicitie Taude on July 10, 1781, in Allone, Maine-et-Loire.
