Meaning of Muat

The Meaning of the Surname Muat

The surname Muat is most commonly associated with Scotland, yet has French origins. Recorded in modern spellings such as Mouat, Mouatt, Muat, Mowat, and Mowatt, the name derives from the place name "Mont Haut," for which there are several examples in France. It was introduced to England in 1066 by followers of William, known as The Conqueror, who granted lands in Wales to the original bearers, which were then known as Monte Altos. The town of Mold in Flintshire is a greatly reduced version of the surname. However, the first recognizable hereditary records are found in Scotland, with Yorkshire closely following, such as Robert de Muhaut, who was recorded in the rolls of the Abbey of Rievaulx, Yorkshire, in 1250 AD.

In Scotland, the name bearers quickly made a name for themselves, and during the reign of William, The Lyon, they were granted lands in Angus, including the lordship of Ferne House. Michael de Monte Alto was Sheriff of Inverness in 1234, and William de Monte Alto was Sheriff of Cromarty in 1263. In 1289, William de Muhart was a signatory to a letter to King Edward I of England, while Bernard de Mohaut was sentenced in 1305 by the same king to be "hanged, drawn, and quartered" for the murder of the king's chamberlain! The change in name to the modern form seems to have taken place over the next century, as the Mowats settled in Ayrshire in 1450. Examples of records include Mathew Mowatt, baptized on October 13, 1659, in Kilmarnock, while Margaret Muat was baptized in Ayr on January 1, 1671, and Heugh Mouat was a witness in Kilmarnock on September 29, 1684. The first recorded spelling of the surname is that of Robert de Montealto, dated to 1130, when he was present as a courtier at the royal court in Edinburgh during the reign of King David I of Scotland, 1124-1139. Surnames became necessary as governments introduced taxation of individuals. In England, this was sometimes known as the Poll Tax. Over the centuries, surnames have continued to "evolve" in all countries, often leading to surprising variations of the original spelling.
