Meaning of Oñate

Oñate Meaning: Exploring the Surname's Origins and Etymology

The surname Oñate is of very ancient Basque origin, derived from a toponymic source that can be found registered as Oñate, and less commonly with the archaic form "de Oñate", indicating a prepositional origin "from". It originates from the place name Oñate, the name of a city in the province of Guipúzcoa, derived from the Basque word oñate/oñati, meaning "foot of the mountain". Today, it is a relatively common surname found throughout Spain, with a significant presence in regions such as the Basque Country, Navarra, Aragon, Barcelona, the Valencian Community, Murcia, Madrid, La Mancha, and Andalusia.

The original house of this surname was located in the city of Oñate in the district of Vergara in Guipúzcoa, initially known as the house of Izurrategui and now as Antuena.

It is believed to originate from Garibay's house, as it bore its arms. There were other Oñates in the same city who did not come from this house but from Idígoras in the same area, adopting the toponymic surname and calling themselves Oñate de Idigoras. One of them was Martín de Oñate Idigoras, a resident of Vitoria who in 1552 had a legal dispute with the council over his nobility and obtained a favorable judgment on October 19 of the same year.

The Oñate family from the primitive house Izurrategui extended into Pamplona, Peralta, Mongelos, and Olite, all located in Navarra.

Martín de Oñate was granted an execution on April 8, 1489, by the Kings of Navarra, Don Juan and Doña Catalina. In 1576, Hernando de Oñate also provided information about his nobility. This was later reiterated by another Hernando de Oñate, son of the former, and resident of Olite and Sigüenza (Guadalajara), in 1607. Alfonso de Oñate, his grandson, presented these documents in Soria in 1623.

Juan de Oñate Barca y Contreras, a native of Fitero (Navarra), was a knight of the Military Order of Santiago in 1648. The Oñates then settled in the regions of Castile, La Mancha, and Andalusia, where they built new houses. They confirmed their nobility before the Royal Court of Granada: Antonio Alfonso Oñate, resident of Villagarcía (Cuenca), in 1780; Martín de Oñate, resident of Canalejas (Cuenca), in 1546; and Martín de Oñate Uribarri, a native of Oñate and resident of Canalejas (Cuenca), in 1567.

These historical accounts shed light on the rich heritage and lineage of the Oñate surname, showcasing its deep roots in Spanish history and culture.
