The first two, recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 for their respective counties as Penningetun, derive their name from the Old English "pening" before the 7th century, meaning a penny, which refers to a tribute due on the land, plus "tun", a farm or settlement.

The latter, recorded in the Assize Court Rolls of Lancashire in 1246 as Pinington and Pynington, translates to "the settlement of Pinna's people". The first recorded bearer of the name (see below) was a soldier who fought during the Scottish Civil War and for the Lancastrians. He was presented with a cup by King Henry VI, known as the "Luck of Muncaster," which is still kept at Muncaster Castle. On July 8, 1548, Elin Pennington was baptized in Ulverston, and Allan Pennington married Issabell Scale on November 21, 1568, in Hawkshead, Lancashire. One of the earliest settlers in the New World was William Pennington, 18 years old, who sailed from the port of London aboard the "Thirst" towards Bermuda in September 1635.
