Meaning of Plinck

Plinck Surname Meaning and Etymology

Recorded as Planche, Planque (French), Plank, Plancke, Planck, Planks, Plaunk, Plincke (English), and possibly others, this is a surname of French origin. It seems to have first arrived in England with the famous Norman invaders of 1066, with perhaps the earliest recording being that of Jacobus de Planche in 1307, William de la Plaunke in the Close Rolls of the City of London in 1373, and three centuries later Elizabeth Plank, baptized on August 11, 1678 in St. Dunstan's in the East, Stepney.

Returning from France, the name came back with the Protestant Huguenots who fled to England in the 17th and 18th centuries, at least temporarily retaining the French spelling. However, due to the animosity between the two countries, the spelling Planque seems to have died out by 1750 and only the English forms have been recorded thereafter. This is not uncommon, as very few Huguenot spellings have been preserved, and at least it sounds almost the same as the original French.

There seems to be a disagreement regarding the original meaning, which could potentially be topographical, for someone who lived by a single tree in the plain, or in a hidden place or a lookout point. Four families of Planque were recorded in England around the time of Queen Anne (1702 - 1714), the first of which was apparently led by Pierre Planque, who was recorded on February 13, 1712 at the La Patente Huguenot Church in the City of London.
