Meaning of Renfrew

The Renfrew Surname: Meaning and Etymology

The ancient Scottish surname Renfrew has been recorded in variations such as Renfrew, Renfreu, Renfree, and the unusual Rentfree. The name is derived from the town of Renfrew, although all the different spellings of the name are likely English developments. The surname is first mentioned in the 13th century, when the bearer of the name had to swear allegiance to the Scottish government during the time of conflict between kings from 1296 to 1306, when the famous Robert the Bruce ascended to the throne. In 1304, a certain Robert Reynfreu was a prisoner of the English and was held in Old Sarum Castle, Salisbury.

He was apparently released in 1307, perhaps as an act of mercy, when King Edward I of England, known as "The Hammer of the Scots," died. Later records include Galfridus Renfrew in Aberdeen in 1408 and Bartholomew Renfrew in Glasgow in 1481. The London church records contain John Rentfrow, a witness at St. Leonards Church, Shoreditch, on July 7, 1669, and John Rentfree, at St. Brides Church, Fleet Street, on November 18, 1689. On January 5, 1761, Benjamin Renfree married Jane Jones in St. Dionis Backchurch, while possibly the same Benjamin Renfree married Mary Jones in St. Leonards, Shoreditch, in 1769.

The first recorded spelling of the surname is shown to be that of Adam de Reynfreu, dated 1296, during the Interregnum government of Scotland, 1296 - 1306, when he pleaded loyalty to the Scottish council. Surnames became necessary as governments introduced personal taxation, known in England as the Poll Tax. Over the centuries, surnames have continued to "evolve" in all countries, often leading to surprising variants of the original spelling.
