Meaning of Schach

Schach Meaning: Exploring the Surname

Recorded in various spellings, including Schach, Schacter, and Schechter in German, as well as Szach, Szachnitow, and Szachniewicz in Polish, this is a occupational surname. It originally described a cattle butcher, but in later times, it seemed to be often Ashkenazi Jewish and specifically used to describe a ritual slaughterer. The derivation is said to come from the Hebrew "shachet," meaning "to slaughter," adding a slight twist to the origin, as early recordings were not Jewish but Roman Catholic. Polish and sometimes German surnames, certainly those of Slavic origin, resemble the Italian in their preference for diminutive or hypocoristic endings such as "-owicz," "-ewicz," or "-ski."

In this case, we were able to trace a number of German records back to the Middle Ages, as well as later ones from surviving records of the 18th and 19th centuries. Unfortunately, the Polish records during this long period are either unpredictable or seemingly non-existent, or likely destroyed for political reasons. Some of the records we were able to find include Heinrich Schechellin von Klingau in 1362 and Haintz der Schach von Andelfingen in Germany in 1381. Later recordings include Vinautius Szachewicz in Graudenz on March 3, 1762, and Francisco Szachnitowski in Briesen, both in West Prussia, on September 27, 1868.
