Meaning of Schubert

Schubert Meaning: Uncovering the Origins of the Surname

There are several words in German used to describe a cobbler or shoemaker, including Schuh, Schuster, and Schubert as well as the popular von Schumacher. All are loosely based on a High German word “schuoch” from before the 7th century, combined with various suffixes like “wurte,” “macher,” or “mann.” The name has been recorded in numerous forms, including Schuoch, Schuber, Schubart, Schubert, Schubbert, Schubort, Schuckert, Schuhose, Schukraft, Schuhler, Schumann, Schumeier, the Polish Szubert, and the Czech Subrt.

Like many famous names, Schubert had humble beginnings. In the highly skilled guilds of the Middle Ages, shoemaking was considered both essential and a profession only available to those willing to complete a lengthy apprenticeship of at least seven years. Occupational surnames were likely some of the earliest created around the 12th century, but they were not initially hereditary. There are many examples of occupational surnames where the son later pursued a completely different profession than the father. This led to identifications like Heinrich Schneider filius Schuh, or essentially Heinrich the tailor, son of the shoemaker. The next generation, if any, could then choose either Schuh or Schneider, or perhaps, if the profession changed again, take on something entirely different! Not until the 15th century were names fully hereditary, mostly due to taxation, as authorities insisted on continuous “family” names. Early examples of surname recordings include Richardus Schumacher of Konstanz in 1276, Haunold Schuheler of Niederderneusiedel in 1339, and Apel Schuwurt, a citizen of Würzburg in 1435. Later recordings include Gregor Schubert of Striegau in 1552 and Christian Schubart of Nürnberg (1739 - 1791).

Etymological Insights

Mid-High German scuochwürhte (= shoe worker) was the native term for a shoemaker, rather than the borrowed term Schuster. This formed the basis for all these surnames. An East Middle German variant is Schuwart and Schubort.

According to Herbert Maas, Schubert, Schilbers (Rhineland) can be related to Gilbert, with a romanized Sch-! In Hans Bahlow's view, Schubert in the East Central German region evolved from middle-hoch-Deutsch schuochwürchte, -worchte “shoemaker” (actually - “worker”) to schuwort, schuwert, schubort, or Schubert. Later, the spelling Schubart (16th century) emerged. Variations with Schuh can be found in other Upper German and Central German composite surnames, such as Schu(h)macher.

While the meaning and origins of the surname Schubert may have evolved over time, its significance as a tribute to the skilled profession of shoemaking remains evident in its etymology and historical connections.
