Meaning of Seson

Seson Meaning

The surname Seson, although uncommon, has a well-documented history dating back to the beginnings of surnames in the 12th century. It is almost certain that the original bearers of the name were supporters of William the Conqueror in 1066, either fighting with him at the Battle of Hastings or joining him shortly after. They seem to have been granted lands in Cambridge, where we find the first records of the surname in this county, although a century after the battle. The surname originates from the French department of Aisne in northern France and derives from the town of 'Soissons'.

Once this information is known, it is easy to see how the surname evolved, gradually receiving an "English" transposition to arrive at its modern form. Among the earliest recordings is Esueillardus de Soissuns in the Pipe Rolls of Cambridge for the year 1190 during the first year of Richard I, also known as the Lionheart. "Esueillardus" is most likely the same person as the one shown in the earliest known record below. By the year 1212, during the reign of King John, some members of the "family" had moved further away, as Riulfus de Sessuns is recorded in the Feet of Fines rolls for Berkshire. The coat of arms was paradoxically granted in Oxford, and apparently heralds, like clerics, had difficulties with spelling, as the grant applies to both Seson and Sessions. The coat of arms depicts per fesse Crenellee Gold and Blue, three griffin's heads erased and counterchanged.

The earliest recorded spelling of the surname is that of Esueillardus de Seissuns, dated 1180, in the Pipe Rolls of Cambridge during the reign of King Henry II, known as "The Church Builder", from 1154 to 1189. Surnames became necessary as governments introduced personal taxation. In England, this was known as the Poll Tax. Over the centuries, surnames have continued to "evolve" in all countries, often leading to remarkable variations of the original spelling.
