Meaning of Sinibaldi

Sinibaldi: The Meaning Behind the Surname

The surname Sinibaldi derives from the Lombardic name Sinibaldus or Sigebaldus, meaning “brave victor.”

On a plaque from the 12th century, we read: "Annis Exactis bis Senis Mille Ducentis Hoc Ipso Fieri Tempore Cepit Opus Angelerus Erat Cum Bonnome Consul Tertius Hic Iuntus Vir Sinibaldus Erat." In 1300, we read: "...fr. Sinibaldus Pennini, brother of Ricculdi, from the people of St. Peter Major, priest and preacher; he was a secular parish priest, after which he submitted himself to the order, completing 24 years in the order, he passed from this light to Christ."

Traces of this surname can be found in Montelupo (FI), where the sculptor and architect Bartolomeo Sinibaldi, better known as Baccio da Montelupo (1469-1535), was born, and a certain Sinibaldus de Sinibaldis was enrolled at the University of Perugia in 1585.

The surname Sinibaldi has a significant presence in Latium and Umbria, but there also seems to be a line in Bergamo and Veneto.

Sicbaldi is almost unique.

Simbaldi is probably unique.

Variants: Sicbaldi, Sibaldi, Sibòldi. Diffused in the basic form from the North to Tuscany, in variants in the Northwest, it has at its core the Germanic name Sinibaldo, of Lombardic and then Frankish tradition, documented in Italy initially, in the 8th century, in the form Sichipaldus, then, from the 10th century, Sigebaldus, and from the 11th Sigembaldus and Senebaldus. The Germanic personal name is formed by *sigin- and *sin-, secondary forms of *sigu- “victory” (see Siccardi), and *baltha- “bold, courageous” (see Baldi), and its original meaning could therefore be “bold in victory.”
