Meaning of Studart

The Meaning and Etymology of the Surname Studart

This interesting surname has Anglo-Saxon origins and comes from an occupational name for a breeder or keeper of horses. The name has two possible sources. The first source comes from the Old English before the 7th century "stod", stud (farm), and the Old English "hierde", herder, guardian, from the Old English "heord", herd. The second source comes from Middle English (1200 - 1500) "stott", bull, ox, from the Old English "stott", inferior type of horse, and the Old English "hierde", as before.

The development of the family name since 1195 (see below) includes the following: Geoffrey Stodhurd (1219, Northumberland), Richard le Stodehard (1332, Yorkshire), Thomas Stoderd (1481, Yorkshire), and John Stodard (1482, Yorkshire). The modern family name can be found as Stoddart, Stoddard, Stod(h)art, Studart, Studdert, and Stiddard. Records in London include the marriages of George Stoddard and Anne Sexton on November 14, 1559 in St. Dunstan-in-the-East and of Edward Stoddard and Agnes Smith on October 7, 1577 in Tottenham. The first recorded spelling of the family name is that of Vlfus Stodhyrda, dated 1195, in the Pipe Rolls of Cumberland, during the reign of King Richard I, known as "The Lionheart," 1189 - 1199. Surnames became necessary as governments introduced taxation on individuals. In England, this was known as the Poll Tax. Over the centuries, surnames have continued to "evolve" in all countries, often leading to remarkable variations of the original spelling.
