Meaning of Stutely

The Stutely Surname Meaning and Etymology

This interesting surname is of Anglo-Saxon origin and is a dialectal variant of the place name from one of the locations called Studley in Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Warwickshire, and West Riding of Yorkshire. It derives from the Old English "stod" before the 7th century, meaning stud, plus "leah", wood, clearing, hence a pasture for horses. The place name is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Stodlei". During the Middle Ages, as it became more common for people to move away from their birthplace to seek work further afield, the custom developed of adopting the place name as a means of identification.

The surname dates back to the late 13th century (see below). Variations in the spelling of the surname include: Stuteley, Stutley, Stutly, Stetlye, and Stutly. The London church records list the baptisms of Martin, son of Walter Stutly, on December 21, 1599, at St. Mary Whitechapel, Stepney, and of Anna Stutely on November 20, 1665, at St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster. A coat of arms granted to the family is silver, a green fess between three black stag's heads cabossed. The crest is a black stag's head cabossed. The first recorded spelling of the family name is that of William de Stodley in 1273 in the "Hundred Rolls of Leicestershire" during the reign of King Edward I, known as "The Hammer of the Scots", 1272 - 1307.

Surnames became necessary as governments introduced personal taxation. In England, this was known as Poll Tax. Over the centuries, surnames have continued to "evolve" in all countries, often leading to surprising variations from the original spelling.
