Meaning of Swadling

Swadling Meaning: Understanding the Origins of the Surname

The surname Swadling, also recorded as Swadlen, Swadlin, and Swadlinge, has its origins in Nordic Viking roots. It derives from a personal name from before the 8th century, which is also the first element in the town of "Swadlingcotes" in Derbyshire, recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Sivardincotes." The surname does not appear to originate from the town in Derbyshire, but it may come from another, now "lost" village, a common occurrence as at least five thousand surnames in the British Isles come from villages or hamlets that have completely disappeared, with only the surname remaining.

The surname is well documented in the London region, although not before 1592, so it is likely that there are earlier records of the surname somewhere, but unfortunately, they could not be located. Early church records, however, show that in the late 16th century, a family lived in Clerkenwell, recorded with varying spellings of Swadling, Swadlinge, and Swadlen, as seen below. The father's name was Henry, and the son Humphrey is depicted below. The eldest daughter Elizabeth was baptized on September 21, 1600, in St. James, Clerkenwell, and she married Robert Kyrbye in the same church on September 23, 1621. As far as is known, she was not related to Thomas Swadlin, a royalist clergyman who became the rector of St. Botolphs without Aldgate, London in 1642. He was also born in London in 1600. Thomas was imprisoned by Parliament and deprived of his livelihood, although he was "restored" by Charles II in 1660. The first recorded spelling of the surname is that of Humphrey Swadlen, dated July 10, 1597, and baptized in St. James, Clerkenwell, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, known as "Good Queen Bess" from 1558 to 1603.

Surnames became necessary as governments introduced personal taxation, known in England as the Poll Tax. Over the centuries, surnames have continued to "evolve" in all countries, often leading to remarkable variations in the original spelling.
