Already under the reign of Alfonso I, the warrior, he took part in the reconquest of Zaragoza in 1118 and the following campaign of the same king in the region of the Jalón Valley in 1120, adopting the surname Urrea because he had won the Moors the place of that name (probably the current Urrea de Jalón) and the founding of a manor in that area, whose traces can still be found today in the urban heraldry of the area.

Mossèn Jaime Febrer quotes in his Trovas: "Ximén de Urrea, a wealthy man from Aragón, came with riders and foot soldiers to the conquest three blue stripes and three more silver ones, a certain insignia of his great house. The story refers to his deeds and virtues, and for this reason, King Alcalatén offered him as a prize, which he gladly accepted, and founded a castle taming the Moors."

Don Lope Ximénez de Urrea, Viceroy of Rueda, Lord of Almonacid, Épila, Trasmor, Mata, Castelviejo, Salinas, and Casanueva, was appointed Count of Aranda on January 19, 1508; Grandee of Spain in 1626 to the Viceroy Antonio Ximénez de Urrea. The House of Urrea was finally incorporated into that of Abarca de Bolea, which later merged with the ducal house of Híjar. Since 1957, the Duchess of Alba has been the 17th Countess.

In Soria, there was a family of this surname with a branch in Bilbao, to which Captain Juan de Urrea y Briand belonged, who was baptized in Bilbao and married Francisca Teresa Guillaume, Lady of Morandais. These spouses went to Chile, where their descendants were called Morandais and later Morandé. Their coat of arms seems to come from the Basque etymology of URREA (urre = gold, urritz = hazelnut), and the surname could in this case derive from the surname Urrecha, Basque, from Duranguesado (Vizcaya) and which also has a coat of arms: A golden field, a plain hazelnut, terraced Gules, accompanied by two azure goats sitting on the trunk.
