Meaning of Vane

Vane Meaning: Unraveling the Origin and Etymology of a Noble English Surname

Recorded in various forms including Fain, Fane, Fayne, Faynes, Vain, Vaines, Vanes, and Vayne, Vane is a renowned and noble English surname. However, its origins are at best very confused and stem from multiple sources, possibly including France and Wales. The first and most probable source is that it originally was a nickname for a "well-disposed person." As such, this was a derivation of the Old English word "foegen" from the 7th century, the Middle English word "fein or fayn" from the 12th century, and according to the New English Dictionary of 1883, quoted from an Elizabethan source "Fayne promys makyth folys Fayne", roughly translated as a person who consistently opposes fools! The word as Fayn was also used as a first name in the Middle Ages and there is also a slight possibility that for some name bearers it derives from the Welsh word "fain" meaning slender.

To further confuse matters, there is also a place in La Manche, Normandy called "Vains", and it is likely that some name bearers come from this local source, perhaps having crossed over with the Normans during the invasion of 1066. It is said that Sir John Vane, who was knighted in the Battle of Poitiers, wrote his name as Fane in his will dated April 16, 1488. He was the ancestor of the Vane family, Earls of Darlington, and the Fane family, Earls of Westmorland! The first recorded spelling of the surname may be that of William le Vain. This was dated in the Worcestershire county tax lists to the year 1242, during the reign of King Henry III of England, 1216 - 1272. Over the centuries, surnames have further "evolved" in each country, often leading to astonishing variations from the original spelling.

Collins shows that the two peerage families of Vane and Fane are of the same origin. The arms consist of the same tinctures and charges, namely: Azure, three gauntlets, Or, but the gauntlets of the Vanes are for the left hand, while those of the Fanes are dexter or right hand ones.
