Meaning of Weddeburn

Wedderburn Meaning and Etymology

Recorded as Weatherburn, Weddeburn, and more commonly Wedderburn, this is a very interesting Scottish surname. It originates from an estate that was originally known as "The lands of Wedderburn" near the town of Duns in Berwickshire, Scotland. Berwickshire is located in the area historically known as the Border Country. This was a region that, after the end of the Roman occupation of England, served as a "no man's land" between the two countries, where law and order barely prevailed.

The place name seems to be translated from the English words "weder-burna" before the 7th century as "sheep stream," although it seems illogical why any river would be named after sheep. What we do know is that bearers of the name were generally found in the counties of Forfar, Linlithgow, and Perth, although the first recorded bearer of the name could possibly be Wautier de Wedur, who swore allegiance to the Scottish government of John Bailiol in 1296. James Wedderburn (1495 - 1553) was a famous Scottish actor and poet, while Sir John Wedderburn (1704 - 1747), the 5th Baron of Blackness, Forfar, was a supporter of Bonnie Prince Charlie. He was captured at Culloden and executed as a traitor. His coat of arms bearing a silver shield with a red chevron between three roses was acquired or granted in 1747.

Surnames became necessary as governments introduced personal taxes, sometimes known as the Poll Tax in England. Over the centuries, surnames have continued to "evolve" in all countries, often leading to astonishing variations of the original spelling.
